Facebook Passport
Problem
Getting work visa is a hassle. My European friends told me stories that their employment got cancelled because getting US visa took too long. Also, in recent days, European Parliament is trying to pass a bill to require US citizens to get visa in order to travel to Europe. This is in response to US's action on Muslim Ban.
Becasue of politicians rhetorics and bureacracy, millions of people might lose the convenience of traveling. In search for an answer, I began to jot down ideas for alternate ways to get visa both for travel and work.
Process
I began to look at Facebook as a country. After doing quick google searches, I found out that Facebook's MAU is a lot bigger than China and India's population. And that number is expected to grow due to the smartphone growth in developing world. What if Facebook issues passport? What would that look like? Can we ask people to do good things by providing convenience? These were some of the questions that triggered my imagination. And I began to design the app concept.
Solution
The app design proposes idea of helping people get visa in matter of days rather than months. When you decide to travel somewhere, you would apply to volunteer in the community of your choice and that is your only requirement to get expedited visa.
This will help elevate Facebook's mission on connecting people in real world as well. This type of service would require tight collaboration between policy makers, international lawyers and organizations that need help.
